Simple Yoga positions and breathing techniques help children to find a calming way in which to manage their emotions and has been proven to reduce challenging behaviours. It has also been proven to help with children's attention span and developing a sense of compassion for others. Yoga improves balance, strength and offers psychological benefits for children.
Gardening is well known for stimulating the senses , making it a brilliant tool for learning! It helps develop vocabulary, a love of nature and keeps the children physically active all at the same time. At our preschool we thrive in such environments and love learning through playing in nature. After growing our crops we intend to cook them and enjoy the delicious flavours together with our friends and family.
Cookery sessions are incorporated into our planning and encourage children to learn a range of skills: problem solving, mathematical counting, shapes, measures, instructions, scientific health. This has a positive impact on their hand eye coordination, fine motor skills, turn taking and the ability to follow directions. It also helps the children to think about the different food groups, the types of food that we are cooking and why.
At the Pre-School Of Excellence (POE) we regularly listen to classical music to unwind: Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin to name a few. Studies have revealed that this has been proven to increase concentration skills in young children.
Not only do we share our mother tongue greetings each day but our language specific classes are fun, engaging and encourage the children to sing, dance, listen to stories and play games in a foreign tongue. We learn the basics during language sessions: greetings, numbers and days of the week. This is achieved through repetition and play.
Research shows that targeted music lessons for under fives in deprived areas help to close the gap in learning. Our music sessions incorporate a range of techniques: coordinated clapping patterns; feet stamping; nursery rhymes and actions; drums; shakers; bells; you name it! Children thoroughly enjoy making noise together at our preschool.
At our preschool we believe each child is unique and create our plans around the interests of the children. Each child is assigned a key worker, who develops a close bond with your child and is able to plan activities that peak their interest as well as ensuring their physical and emotional well being. Teachers/Key workers plan a curriculum that incorporates a multifaceted approach to learning all the way from basic toileting needs to spiritual and academic growth. Planning that brings out creativity and artistic flair as well as physical, social and emotional development. This is just another brilliant thing about the EYFS curriculum and the many developmental roads it allows us to travel.
