At the POE, we understand very well the stresses of selecting the perfect setting for your child’s foundational learning. Our pre-school is a purpose built centre with spacious outdoor facilities run by a primary qualified teacher (QTS) with twelve years of experience in safeguarding, teaching and learning.
We are thrilled to announce that we have earned a Merit for the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award!
This year, the children have learned about eco-friendly practices through a range of activities, including Recycle Walks, Earth Awareness sessions, litter picking, and more. These experiences have helped them develop a greater understanding of environmental responsibility.

Qualified teachers plan a broad and balanced curriculum using Development Matters following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework and assess your child in several ways. It is a requirement that practitioners review children's progress and share with parents at two points: between the ages of 24-36 months via the progress check and at the end of Reception via the EYFS profile. We continuously review the ELG's (Early Learning Goals) to ascertain how much of an impact the learning is having on your child.

In addition to the progress check carried out by nursery practitioners, children are offered a Two year health check (usually arranged by their GP) also between the age of 24-36 months. This gives an insight into your toddler's development and opportunity to discuss a range of things: child's communication skills, growth, diet and physical activity, behaviour, toilet training and sleep.
We are located next to a Family Wellbeing Centre who offer a wide range of services including this check, free creche facilities, health services, advice and support.

At The Pre-school of Excellence the four areas of SEN are of paramount importance: communication and interaction, cognition and learning, social, emotional and mental health difficulties and sensory and/or physical needs.
We have a range of provision in place to help support the needs of our children and their families. Those who have a significant delay (or in some instances, profound and multiple learning difficulties) may need a specialist curriculum to plan for their progress. We may use a specialist framework to plan for and discuss their progress. Children in this group will need ongoing support throughout their education and this may involve external agencies within the locality who provide tailored support programmes.
We plan for their progress using Development Matters, ensuring that they take part in a broad curriculum. They are included in the mainstream curriculum but need extra support to make progress. They may need additional opportunities for practise and repetition.
They may also require to have learning broken down into smaller steps. Many children in this group will soon catch up with their peers which is why we are of the mindset that early intervention is best. For example, with the right support, 70% of children with a speech, language or communication delay at two years old are in line with their peers by the time they are five.

Independence and self care is something that we foster in our young people, encouraging and supporting them to think and make logical decisions for themselves. Children will quickly grow confident in the fundamentals of every day life: hanging your own coat/bag, putting on/taking off your own jacket, buttoning/zipping, washing/drying hands, cleaning up after themselves and their peers, putting lids on colouring pens to name a few. We will also have child monitors to promote a sense responsibility for their environment from the very start of their journey.

There is nothing more important to us than your child's safety and wellbeing which is why we ensure that we have a certified Paediatric First Aiders on site at all times. Additionally, to ensure further safety, access is restricted at all entrances, including a buzzer entry, electronic & key entrance door and outdoor areas that are completely surrounded by non transparent fencing.
We adopt an open plan & free flow system of learning enabling the children to partake in a range of activities at their own pace and choosing. Our teaching is influenced by Montessori philosophy/practice and so activity stations are carefully selected to reflect this. Both the indoor and outdoor classroom are always open to the children.
This gives the children the opportunity to enjoy the outdoor cars & trikes, make pies in the mud kitchen and have endless sand and water play. The childrens' interest lead us, which we observe and explore together in a thematic way. Independence and self care is something we foster in our children from the very beginning. The Montessori approach enables us to provide a holistic style of learning for the children with a focus on the physical, emotional, social and academic needs of each child.
